Tourism Squamish
Squamish has a significant tourism industry because of its strategic location on the Sea To Sky Highway halfway between Vancouver and Whistler. Many visitors to Whistler stop, at least briefly, in Squamish for fuel and other services, with a small percentage taking in tourism attractions and features offered in the Squamish area. Squamish is a popular day trip for outdoor recreation enthusiasts based in the Greater Vancouver area.
To enhance the strength of the tourism sector, Squamish would like to strengthen its role as a tourism destination and go beyond its role as a service centre and day trip destination. This will require significant investment in new attractions, infrastructure and facilities (particularly roofed accommodations) in order to attract and cater to overnight destination visitors. To this end there are significant investment opportunities in:
- Accommodation
- Attractions
- Themed retail
- Festivals/Events
- Tour Operators
Squamish was one of a handful of communities selected in 2006 for the Tourism BC Community Tourism Foundations Development Program. The Community Tourism Foundations Development Program (lead by Tourism BC) has provided Squamish with a paid facilitator to lead the tourism development process including setting up a community Destination Marketing Organization, establishing a permanent tourism funding source and developing a sustainable tourism development plan.

"With all the future development of the water front, finding our location was the biggest challenge we had to face [before opening for business]."
