Spirit of Squamish Committee

Spirit of SquamishEvery Community in BC, through the Provincial Government, has been given the opportunity to set up their own Spirit of BC Committee, with guidance, direction, and vast support coming from the provincially organized 2010 Legacies Now (www.2010legaciesnow.com). 2010 Legacies Now is a not-for-profit society committed to building a stronger British Columbia. Their vision is to create sustainable legacies that will benefit all British Columbians as a result of hosting the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Each community Spirit Committee has different tasks and projects underway based on strengths and desires exemplified within each of their own individual communities.

Squamish has the unique challenge of being located between two Olympic Venues. Some projects that the Spirit Committee is currently nurturing include:

  • BOSAP (Best of Squamish Awareness Program) – by utilizing sponsorship dollars provided by generous local business owners, local athletes, coaches, mentors, etc. are highlighted through a poster and merchant awareness program. Eventually dollars will find their way back to help support and assist future athletes from our community to compete on the world stage.
  • Homestay – with so many athlete relatives and volunteers descending on the Corridor in 2010, they all need places to stay. Through initiatives taken by the Squamish Spirit Committee and with support from VANOC, relatives are starting to be aligned to ensure there is warm bed and a welcome smile for our visiting friends from around the world.
  • Volunteer Recruitment – Squamish is fortunate to be called home to one of only two VANOC Volunteer Centres in the Province. These Centres are where a majority of the thousands of volunteers will be recruited from and trained leading up to the 2010 games. Taking advantage of the structure and expertise, the Squamish Spirit Committee is working closely with VANOC to build a legacy in our community to ensure the demand on future volunteers is not strained by the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, but, instead, is strengthened by new found knowledge and practices that ensure the pool of available volunteers in the community is ever growing and fresh as we maintain the self proclaimed moniker of “Recreation Capital of Canada”.
  • Wild At Art Festival Support and Funding – this amazing five-day festival is entering its sixth year. All that Squamish has to offer from the Arts and Culture sector is on display during this wildly active, action packed, mind blowing series of days (www.wildatart.ca). The Squamish Spirit Committee is dedicated to assisting the successful growth of the Festival as well as helping lobby funds.
  • 2010 Opportunity Communication – through the newly struck  District of Squamish Olympic Opportunity Task force, the Squamish Spirit Committee will help establish and implement any and all opportunities that the 2010 Winter Olympic Games may provide for the Community. Support also includes being a central place of communication for the people as multiple opportunities are explored simultaneously.

What they're saying...

"Changing the location of my clinic from the industrial area to Cleveland Avenue has been great decision, my clients now have the convenience of visiting all the great retail shops, services and restaurants close by and I have an amazing network with other like-minded business owners that I am proud to call my neighbor's. I'm very excited to see how much things are evolving for everyone doing business downtown, I love the ecclectic feeling of walking down Cleveland Avenue!"
