Construction Industry
The 2006 census confirmed that construction is one of the leading employment sectors for Squamish residents with approximately 14 percent of the labor force working in this industry. Many factors are fueling development in Squamish and recent years have seen a strong construction sector emerge to help keep pace with the development demand throughout the Sea to Sky Corridor.
The data illustration below portrays the development permits approved in 2005-2009 have historically been higher than the number of building permits issued reflecting multi-phase approvals or projects that made it through approvals but did not proceed.
In the past year more Commercial applications have been approved than any other year to date.
The District of Squamish is facing an unprecedented level of development and population growth. The Growth Management Strategy (2005) indicated that the population of Squamish is projected to increase from 14,949 people in 2006 (source: Stats Canada) to 33,100 people in 2031. Given the growth projections a strong and vibrant construction and development industry will be required to answer demand. Even with the Winter Olympics of 2010 being history, major development projects are underway that will continue to fuel the construction industry in Squamish over the next couple of decades. Waterfront Landing and the Oceanfront Development are two of the larger projects stimulating the industry over the next 15-20 years.
